Marqí Hotel, Lisbon

Marqí, a private boutique hotel, came into existence through the collaborative efforts of Danish photographer and former fashion brand owner, Mikkel Kristensen, along with a group of friends and partners. Nestled on a winding road at the base of the enchanting Sintra mountains, Marqí occupies a converted 1980s mansion. The meticulously renovated mansion now boasts a total of eight spacious rooms and suites, each with its own private balcony or terrace, ensuring a unique experience for every guest. No two units are alike, as each space has been thoughtfully designed and styled.

We chat to Mikkel about the journey of bringing Marqí to life, as he captures the beauty of Sommer Swim against the backdrop of his unique hotel.

What makes Marqí Hotel a standout destination for travellers visiting the Portuguese capital region?

What first comes to mind is probably the sense of aesthetics, but what sticks longer is a special feeling here even after entering the lobby the first time. There’s a sense of calm and privacy. It sort of feels like you’re at a private house with cool friends but with the service of a hotel..

Can you describe the unique design and aesthetic elements that set Marqí apart from other hotels in the city?

The house itself is so interesting and quirky and we wanted to keep a lot of that charm but brighten it up with simple vintage design pieces from the 70s mainly. I mostly concern myself with designing it as a place I personally think is beautiful and cool, since it is also where I live. That might be what people feel set it apart.

What are some of the top amenities and services offered at Marqí to enhance the guest experience?

Breakfast on the terrace overlooking palm trees and the garden with the green valley and coastline in the back is my favourite. Cocktails any time of day or night in the lobby or by the pool is a close second. It is also cool to get a ride in our vintage Mercedes to the local restaurants or beaches. And then of course if you’re lucky enough to see the secret club ’Nando’s Place' while you’re here! (Shhh) Besides, we help with classic concierge services, chauffeur services, in-room massage, mini bars etc.

Can you provide insights into the history and heritage of the building that houses Marqí?

Yes! In 1987, a Portuguese civil engineer by the name of Fernando Talvez - a well-connected businessman and part of the jet-set crowd, finished a four-story house of his own design in the lush hills above Praia Grande. A house to spend weekends out of Lisbon with his wife and three daughters, and entertain friends and clients around the pool, in the lobby bar, and in his basement disco ’Nando’s Place. We purchased the house in 2020 and did some renovations and room additions to make it more hotel-like.

How does Marqí Hotel Lisbon cater to the needs and preferences of different types of travellers, from business professionals to leisure seekers?

It’s mostly a destination for leisure and seclusiveness. We help many of our guests with surf experiences, yoga lessons, and coaching at a stunning tennis court nearby. But it’s not unusual, especially on the shoulders of the season, for people to work remotely here and stay ‘in residence’.
